What I’m Reading

Gobsmacked!!!

I just finished reading Cloud Cuckoo Land, by Anthony Doerr, and I’m almost at a loss for words. This is my new favorite book, and that just doesn’t happen for me. But it is so gorgeous, so complex and well crafted, with twists and turns and satisfying moments of love and heroism and just simple human existence. I just can’t! Please read!

Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time

What can I say? It’s Life In The Time of Covid. I can’t keep my thoughts linear, I can’t focus enough to read much that takes work, I can’t even really read much, so I’m listening to the Robert Jordan series on Audible. I got hooked by the Amazon Prime series, and thought I’d give the book (singular, I thought) a whirl. Who would-a’ thunk there were FOURTEEN books in the series??? I can’t say they are all that good, but I’m connected, and I feel a sense of grief when I stop reading. And I can’t take another drop of grief right now, so I keep buying more books. My husband goes around the house saying “Aes Sedai” (the term for the warrior-nun-like women in the books) and waving his fist in the air, so how can I stop? I just finished book 4, and am battling about starting book 5. NNNOOOOooooooo!

The H-Spot: The Feminist Pursuit of Happiness, by Jill Filipovich

What do women want? The same thing men were promised in the Declaration of Independence: happiness, or at least the freedom to pursue it.  In The H-Spot, Filipovich (a former student of mine!) explores this complex social, political and economic issue with humor, wisdom and an incredible knack for telling it like it is but maintaining optimism and hope for the future.  I was inspired to start this blog by her, and am loving the read!
